Fodor's Review

Yamagata is famous for soba, and Shojiya is the oldest soba restaurant in Yamagata. For lunch or a light dinner, try tempura soba (¥1,500) or in summer, cold soba with fried tiny shrimps (sakura-ebi; ¥1,320). The immediate area is as interesting as the restaurant; you can see restored irrigation channels where five dams were built in 1623 to control flooding, and nearby are traditional kimono and green-tea shops. The eatery is a 10-minute walk from the JR Station.
