Jigoku-dani Yaen Koen (Jigoku-dani Monkey Park)

Jigoku-dani Yaen Koen (Jigoku-dani Monkey Park) Review

When snow is on the ground, the Japanese white macaques that make their home here are a big draw. To be on the safe side, don't feed or touch them—or look them in the eye. The train goes as far as Yudanaka; from there, take a taxi or bus to Kanbayashi Onsen, from which it is a 40-minute walk. From early December to late March, you can catch the Snow Monkey Holiday Minibus from Yudanaka or Shibu Onsen to the hot springs where they like to soak. The bus doesn't run every day, so check in advance. A round-trip bus ride is ¥700 from Shibu Onsen and ¥800 from Yudanaka. Buy your tickets at least a day in advance, then call the bus company on the day you plan to visit to reserve a seat (your hotel can help).
