Ogi Review

The trip from Sawata to Ogi takes 50 minutes, the highlight being the beautiful benten-iwa (rock formations) just past Tazawaki. Take a window seat on the right-hand side of the bus. You can use Ogi as a port for returning to Honshu by ferry (2½ hours to Naoetsu) or on the hydrofoil (1 hour). Ogi's chief attractions are the taraibune, round, tublike boats used for fishing. You can rent one (¥500 for a 30-minute paddle), and with a single oar paddle your way around the harbor. Taraibune can also be found in Shukunegi on the Sawasaki coast, where the water is dotted with rocky islets and the shore is covered with rock lilies in summer.
