Sado Kinzan (Sado Mine)

Sado Kinzan (Sado Mine) Review

Aikawa's mine has been a tourist attraction since operations halted in the 1980s. There are about 325 km (250 mi) of underground tunnels, some running as deep as 1,969 feet. Parts of this extensive digging are open to the public. Robots illustrate how Edo-period slaves worked in the mine. The robots are quite lifelike, and they demonstrate the appalling conditions endured by the miners. The mine is a tough 40-minute uphill walk or a five-minute taxi ride (about ¥900) from the bus terminal. The return is easier.
