Surrounding Osaka Station are a number of self-proclaimed "gourmet palaces," each with several floors of restaurants. Exploring them can be fun. Head for restaurants in the Hankyu Grand Building, the Hankyu Samban-gai (in the basement below Hankyu Station), and Acty Osaka (in front of JR Osaka Station). Most large department stores also house scores of good restaurants, notably the Daimaru in front of JR Osaka Station.
Osaka's shopping arcades and underground shopping areas abound with affordable restaurants and coffee shops, but when in doubt, head to Dotombori-dori and Soemon-cho (so-eh-mon cho-oh), two areas along Dotombori-gawa that spill over with restaurants and bars. Kita-shinchi, in south Kita-ku, is the city's most exclusive dining quarter—the local equivalent of Tokyo's Ginza.
