Whale-Watching in Kerama Islands

On Zamami, late January through March is prime whale-watching season, and during those months you can join two-hour boat tours for ¥5,000. From land, the north shore gives you the best chance of seeing whale tails and fin-slapping humpback antics—bring your best binoculars.

Zamami Whale Watching Association. Weather permitting, boats head out from Zamami port daily at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. You can arrange these tours from Zamami Island or, more commonly and conveniently, from Tomari Port in Naha. Small boats and choppy seas can make whale watching tough for those with weak stomachs. 098/987–2277. www2.vill.zamami.okinawa.jp/whale.
