Fodor's Review

The mountainous, volcanic Kirishima northeast of Kagoshima is one of two possible places (according to Japanese myth) where Amaterasu's grandson descended to earth. The national park, partly on Kyushu and partly on an off-shore island, is dotted with good hiking trails and interesting shrines in addition to the sacred mountain, Takachiho-no-mine.
