If you're looking for somewhere that most tourists never venture, this village—the mythological heart of the country—is well worth the journey. This is the place where the goddess Amaterasu's grandson is said to have descended to Earth to establish the Japanese Imperial Family. It's a favorite of many Japanese tourists, but it has not been discovered by most foreign travelers. An overnight stay is recommended to see the many sights and soak up the atmosphere. A day trip, while possible, doesn't really give you a good enough sense of the place.
