Yamaguchi Ryokan

At a Glance

    Pros

  • about as isolated as one can get in this country
  • awe-inspiring baths and falls
  • rated by some as Best Outdoor Baths in Japan
  • indoor baths are great, too

    Cons

  • perhaps a little too isolated and certainly not suitable if you want to do any exploring outside the ryokan
  • food not as stunning as the baths

Yamaguchi Ryokan Review

From the outdoor baths of this rustic lodge you can watch mineral water meander down the rocky cliffs of the green mountainside. Don't be shy—mixed bathing is often practiced here. Two meals are included, and dinner is served in your Japanese-style room. The lobby has a raftered ceiling and a toasty old-fashioned furnace. It's a cozy place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. From Kumamoto, take the JR Hohi Line to Tateno and switch to the Minami Aso Tetsudo Line.

    Hotel Details
