Fodor's Expert Review Yamaguchi Ryokan
2331 Kawayo, Kumamoto-ken, 869-1404, Japan
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
From the outdoor baths of this rustic lodge you can watch the mineral water meander down the rocky cliffs of the green mountainside. Don't be shy—mixed bathing is often practiced here. Two meals are included in the rates, and dinner is served in your Japanese-style room. The lobby has a raftered ceiling and a toasty old-fashioned furnace. It's a cozy place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. From Kumamoto, take the JR Hohi Line to Tateno Station and then taxi (20 minutes ¥2,700).

- awe-inspiring falls
- some of the best outdoor baths
CONS
- remote location, especially if you don't have a car

- no vegetarian options
