The main appeal of this manor in the woods is the hospitality of the Tatsuji family. White lacy bedspreads decorate the bright guest rooms, which have tall windows overlooking flower bushes. The kitchen creates culinary wonders, from fresh bread to Mediterranean dishes. You can also learn to make clay figurines or washi (colorful Japanese paper). From Kumamoto, take the JR Hohi Line to Tateno and switch to the Minami Aso Tetsudo Line. Get off at Takamori and call the pension, which will have someone pick you up. The hosts ask that you get there before dinner, which is served promptly at 6:30.
