Fodor's Review:

With six centrally located, beautifully restored machiya that can house from 2 people (a little romantic hideaway) to 16 people, Irori offers the unique opportunity to experience life in a traditional Kyoto town house. The company is becoming a dynamic force in the preservation movement, with the intention of continuing to restore more of these precious buildings. One of the founders, Alex Kerr, is also an art dealer. He ensures that the houses are furnished exquisitely with rugs, scrolls, beautiful lamps, and even some sofas. All have beautiful wooden bathtubs. Aside from an English concierge service and the daily replenishing of towels and linens, the houses are occupied as private residences. There Origins Art program offers a range of workshops that last from half a day to several, usually custom made for groups of 10 or more, although smaller groups can inquire. Among the offerings are workshops on the tea ceremony, No drama, and calligraphy.

  • In-room: no TV, Internet.
  • Rate includes: European Plan
