After a long day of sightseeing there is nothing more pleasing than to relax in an outdoor hot spring (gender-segregated) up in the mountains. Seryo is in front of the famed Ohara temple, Sanzen-in. Since the ryokan is in the countryside, the rooms are large, with very plump futons on raised platforms and quaint balconies. The kaiseki dinner (served around 6 PM) includes wild mountain vegetables and wild boar nabe in the winter; breakfast is an opulent array of yudofu, steamed egg custard (chawan mushi) and home made yogurt. With two meals included, ¥21,000 per person is a good value. Usually the inn does not accept single travelers. It takes a 70-minute bus ride from Kyoto Station and then a 10-minute walk to get there.
