$$$$, Sakyo-ku
Fodor's Review:
Carefully shaped bushes, pine trees, and rocks, landscaped by the famed Ogawa family, surround the woodwork and low-hanging tiled eaves of the special entrance to this ryokan, and the sidewalk from the gate curves into the doorway. Yachiyo is less expensive than its counterparts in the deluxe category but still provides attentive care. The inn's biggest draw is its proximity to Nanzen-ji, one of the most appealing temples in Kyoto. Rooms without baths are much less expensive than rooms with bath that overlook the garden or are in the newer building. Breakfast and dinner are included, but you can negotiate lower rates by choosing the yuba or shabu-shabu course over the elaborate kaiseki course and dining in the restaurant rather than in your own room. A limited number of rooms with no meal plan are available.
