Monju sells authentic lacquered trays, bowls, incense holders, and tea containers. Unlike the inexpensive, plastic, faux lacquerware sold at some souvenir shops, real lacquerware has a wooden base, which is then coated with natural lacquer made from the Asian sumac tree. Gold and silver powder is used in the more lavish maki-e lacquerware. You can even buy chopsticks with their own carrying case to use instead of the disposable ones supplied in restaurants. This shop is on Shijo-dori in Gion.
