Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka

  • Address: Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto

Fodor's Review:

With their cobbled paths and delightful wooden buildings, these two lovely winding streets are fine examples of Old Kyoto. This area is one of four historic preservation districts in Kyoto, and the shops along the way sell local crafts and wares such as Kiyomizu-yaki (Kiyomizu-style pottery), Kyoto dolls, bamboo basketry, rice crackers, and antiques. From Kiyomizu-dera turn right halfway down Kiyomizu-zaka. Slightly farther down is a stately landmark: Yasaka Pagoda, the oldest extant wooden structure in Kyoto, last rebuilt in 1440.
