Path of Philosophy

  • Address: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto

Fodor's Review:

Cherry trees line this walkway along the canal. It has traditionally been a place for contemplative strolling since a famous scholar, Ikutaro Nishida (1870-1945), took his daily constitutional here. Now professors and students have to push their way through tourists whose interest lies mainly with the path's specialty shops. Along the path are several coffee shops and small restaurants. Omen, one block west of the Path of Philosophy, is an inexpensive, popular restaurant known for its homemade white noodles. From Kyoto Station take Bus 5 to the Ginkaku-ji-michi bus stop. Walk east on the street that follows the canal. Just after the street crosses a north-south canal, the path begins on your right.
