In a departure from traditional Japanese stroll gardens, Murin-an has expanses of English lawn that reflect the melding of Japanese and Western elements (this blending of styles is also visible in the architecture of the house). Backed by a sweep of hills beyond the shrubs, and unlike the restrained sense of harmony of most traditional Japanese gardens, Murin-an allows more freedom of movement along paths that pass converging streams and a miniature three-tier waterfall. The south side of the garden is almost always in shadow, creating wonderful contrasts. The garden is south of the Dobutsu-en-mae bus stop. Enter from the side road on the other side of a canal.
