A procession of stone lanterns lines the steep path to this tiny temple, which was founded by Emperor Kammu with the priest Saicho in 805. In the year 1185, after the Taira clan was almost annihilated by the Minamoto clan, Kenreimon-in, the mother of the deceased child emperor Antoku and the last survivor of the Taira, found refuge and became a nun here. Note the 11-faced statue of Kannon, the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Few bother to climb the hill to this temple, making it a tranquil place with a bird's-eye view of Kyoto below. Flying squirrels make occasional appearances in summer. Choraku-ji is east of Maruyama Koen.
