Fodor's Review:

Marvel at the range of Japanese fashion, which starts in the pre-Nara era and works its way up through various historical eras to the Meiji period. The museum is one of the best of its kind, and provides an interesting perspective on Japan's history. Exhibitions, which change twice a year, use doll-size replicas to highlight a specific historical period. One room has two mannequins draped in Heian robes that can be tried on for free. From the Raku Art Museum, the Nishijin Textile Center, or Nijo-jo, take Bus 9 south on Horikawa-dori. Disembark at the Nishi-Hongan-ji-mae bus stop. The museum is on the fifth floor of the Izutsu Building, at the intersection of Horikawa and Shin-Hanaya-cho, north of the temple on the other side of the street.

  • Cost: ¥400
  • Open: Oct. 9-Sept. 2, Mon.-Sat. 9-5; closed Apr. 1-8, July 1-8, and Dec. 23-Jan. 6
