$$$$, Nakagyo-ku
Fodor's Review:
For more than 150 years the Nishimura family has welcomed dignitaries and celebrities to this elegant inn. Founded in 1818 to accommodate provincial lords visiting the capital, the inn has hosted Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor, and Yukio Mishima in addition to its 19th-century samurai visitors. The inn is representative of Kyoto in the way it skillfully combines ancient and modern. Where else could you find cedar baths with chrome taps? Rooms in the new wing are pricier; the one with a platform futon is in particular demand. A few blocks away is the Hiiragiya Bekkan, or Annex. The rooms may have fewer antiques and the dinner courses may not be as ornate, but these lodgings open out onto a beautiful garden and cost less.
