$$$-$$$$, Shimogyo-ku
Fodor's Review:
Elements of traditional Japanese interior design (dark wood, clean lines, and subdued beige tones) are combined with ultramodern touches (dark marble and the lobby's quirky geometrical floor lamps) at this popular hotel inside the Kyoto Station building. Rooms are spacious; a standard double room has two double beds, a desk, a little sitting area, and the best combination of Western- and Japanese-style bathrooms. The showerhead is mounted on the wall next to the bathtub, allowing you to shower outside the tub and then relax in the tub as the Japanese do. Take some time to walk between the north and south towers along the glassed walkway. On the 15th floor the sky lounge, which serves a fusion of French and Japanese nouvelle cuisine, has a panoramic view of the city. With a pick of 15 restaurants, including a branch of the famed Kitcho, choosing where to eat is challenging. There's a charge (¥1,000) to use the pool and gym, and no children are admitted to either. Cable television is available at a daily surcharge. Off-peak-season room rates drop considerably, so inquire about seasonal packages.
