Downtown Kobe
In 1868, after nearly 200 years of isolation, the Kobe port opened to the West, and Kobe became an important gateway for cultural exchange. Confined to a small area by its natural boundaries, the city has kept its industrial harbor within the city limits. The harbor's shipping cranes project incongruously against the city's sleek skyscrapers, but the overall landscape manages to blend together beautifully. The harbor is approximately a 15-minute walk southwest of the San-no-miya area.
