Fodor's Review

From woolly mammoth molars to bulky 1950s home electronics, the history of Hokkaido is meticulously exhibited here in glass-topped cases—it's all a tad dry compared to the vivid history lesson at the nearby Hokkaido Historical Village. (The two are linked by a free shuttle bus on Sunday.) But this is a thorough overview of how Meiji Japan realized that this northern island had coal, fish, and agricultural opportunities ripe for the picking. Due to restoration work, the museum will be closed through 2015.
