Fodor's Review

A major stop on bus tours, this small town on the lakeshore has giant hotels blocking the views from the main road. Kitschy souvenir shops sell endless rows of carved Ainu-style bears, and bottles of marimo algae balls line the shelves like eyeless pets waiting for adoption. It's a bit much. At the northern end of the town is the one cobbled street of the Ainu village, lined by shops and restaurants and home to a small museum and a performance center. From May to October there are excellent traditional dance performances five times a day, and the 9 pm show features yukara (chanted epic poems). Performances cost ¥1,100.
