Fodor's Review

Between May and October you can enjoy the lake from a canoe with the help of the Akan Nature Center, which offers two- or eight-person Canadian canoes for a 45-minute beginner course (¥2,100), a two-hour adventure course (¥5,300), or an early morning private tour (starting at ¥14,700 for two people). Reserve at least one day in advance. The center is in Akanko Han, near the Ainu village and next to Spa Inn Yamaguchi on the north end of the main town street. Ask about their camping and mountain climbing trips, as well. If you are impervious to cold, it also has winter programs.
