Toyako Review

World leaders met here for the G8 Summit in 2008, but Lake Toya's most notable activity is still its recent volcanic events. At lunchtime on March 28, 2000, Usu-san volcano exploded for the first time in 23 years, shooting a 10,500-foot-high cloud of ash and smoke over the quiet resort town of Lake Toya. About 16,000 farmers, hoteliers, and townspeople were evacuated. Amazingly, by July everyone came back, cleaned up their town, and reopened for business with still-smoking craters in their midst.
