Tanuki Koji (Tanuki Mall)
Tanuki Koji (Tanuki Mall) Review
Japanese mythology mentions the libidinous nature of the racoon-like tanuki, an animal that lent its name to this neigbhorhood once frequented by prostitutes. Now a different breed of merchant in this kitschy covered arcade is eager to lighten the wallets of passersby, with small shops selling clothing, electronics, and souvenirs. Tanuki Koji has considerably lower prices than the area's department stores. It's also the place to find Hokkaido specialties, from melon confections to dried salmon and seaweed, as well as the occasional belting street performer. Worth a look.
