Nishiyama Kakogun Sansakuro (Nishiyama Crater Trail)

Nishiyama Kakogun Sansakuro (Nishiyama Crater Trail) Review

A brand-new fire station, a school, and houses stand at crazy angles amid the solidified ash flows where the 2000 eruption reached the edges of Toyako Onsen. Walkways wind up into the still steaming hills. Although not as exciting as Hawaiian lava-flow hikes, it's an impressive scene of what can happen when you live next to a volcano. Buses from Toya Station to the onsen stop at the trailhead. The trail is accessible from the coast or from the lakeside above the village.
