According to local lore, this family-run hotel was started in 1903 by a former brothel owner who divorced her husband because he had been sampling the merchandise. Now in a modern building on a tree-lined street between the Former Hokkaido Government Office and the Hokkaido University Botanic Gardens, Nakamuraya offers quintessential Japanese hospitality. The six tatami rooms have small private bathrooms, and the large communal bath is a welcome comfort in winter. There are popular box lunches and a dinner-in-your-room service. The little boy in the lobby's sepia photograph is the current owner's father. Basic English spoken.
