Contemplate the Valley of Hell while soaking in one of the 12 different pools at Dai-ichi Takimoto-kan, a prime example of Japanese mass tourism. It's always busy with tour groups from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Some of the rooms are a bit worn, but you come here to sit in the sumptuous waters, where swimsuits are allowed in some of the outside baths in response to requests from shy foreign customers. There's also a daily shuttle bus from Sapporo. Nonguests can bathe for ¥2,000.
