In this elegant retreat with a splendid view of the Mall, the new combines almost seamlessly with the old; the old being Hari Bhavan, built as a summer residence of the maharaja of Pilibhit in 1926. Set around a red-tile garden patio, the bluestone buildings have classic Kumaoni red-tin roofs with latticework windows and high gables. Rooms are simple, with hardwood floors and furniture; some look down past wrought-iron railings to Nainital and the lake. To get to the Mall, use the hotel's complimentary shuttle or stroll about 10 minutes down the hill from the hotel.
