Ananda in the Himalayas Review

In the heart of the Tehri Garwhal region, at Narendra Nagar—a breathtaking 17-km (11-mi) ascent from Rishikesh through sal trees (tall trees that resemble black oak)—is this magnificent spa resort, a converted maharaja's palace that glows by night like a jewel on the mountain. Each room has a balcony that looks into the forest and down the Ganges and Rishikesh—and better still, you get the same view from your glass-pane bathroom. Furnishings are understated, with ivory-color hand-sewn quilts. In the restaurant, rich tandoori kababs are artfully balanced with tasty organic spa food and freshly baked bread and cakes. The 14-room spa offers massage, yoga, and sybaritic health treatments; if you're feeling vigorous, day-trek to the Kunjapuri Temple, visit the Rajaji National Park, or go river rafting.
