Savoy Hotel

Savoy Hotel Review

The Savoy Hotel, a five-minute walk from the Library end of the Mall, is a must-see (though not a must-stay). Built in 1890, the hotel has gone to seed and is manned by an ancient watchman who presides over cinematic Edwardian ballrooms and dining rooms opening onto verandas, lounges, and a billiards room (where a sign notes that a leopard was once spotted under the table). A total of 121 rooms sprawl across an area as large as two football fields. You can technically still stay here, but it's not recommended. Visit after dark for an amazingly creepy experience—the hotel stays open but feels haunted, perhaps by the festive crowds who filled the rooms in years past.
