March through June and mid-September through December are the ideal windows to visit Uttarakhand. Unlike other mountainous regions, the monsoon tend to hit full force here turning the hills a beautiful verdant green during July and August but bringing landslides that can make trekking tough and driving on narrow, winding mountain roads difficult to impossible. Although the weather is clear and the vistas of the high Himalayan ranges are breathtaking during the winter, the temperature can dip to uncomfortable levels and road travel can be difficult during and after snow storms at higher altitudes. When the kids are on holiday from school, crowds of Indian families make tracks to the hills, particularly to Nainital and Mussoorie in the weeks following the middle of April. Reserve well in advance during this time, as well as around Diwali in November and around the New Year.
