Guides can help you get more out of your sightseeing. Some are long-winded, so don't be afraid to gently turn the discussion to what interests you. And don't fall for the hard sell: you don't have to hire the first one you see—you can always go back and find that first one after you've had a chance to look around a bit. The guides at some sites, such as the Taj Mahal, are accredited by the local or national government, and in such places rates are fixed. Avoid going shopping with guides, because they will inevitably get a cut of the inflated prices you pay the stores.
