Taj Connemara Review

Built as a nawab's (Muslim prince's) home in the 19th century, the Taj Connemara fills it generous hallways with period photographs. Despite the pull of the past, this historic luxury hotel holds a central location in modern Chennai, next door to Spencer Plaza and the rest of the bustle on Anna Salai. The marble-floored lobby is flanked by Hindu statues, temple friezes, and palm trees in copper pots; in the center is a lovely wrought-iron chandelier. Standard rooms include lots of wood and classic touches, but the pricier heritage rooms (in the old wing) have soaring ceilings, soft white lighting, and a desk area that overlooks the outdoor pool. The open-air Raintree restaurant offers classical Indian dance with dinner.
