This small restaurant is a great place to go for South Indian nonvegetarian food, but watch out—the food can be very spicy. Wooden furniture with woven cane backing, traditional pillars and paintings, and an ornate tiled floor and ceiling constitute the old-fashioned Chettinad furnishings. One good dish is the koli ghasi (chicken simmered in rich chilli-and-coconut gravy). Murungai ulli theeyal (shallots and a long, thin fibrous green vegetable called a "drumstick" served with roasted spices and coconut) goes well with any of the several types of rice dishes on offer. If you want something mild, go for appams with stew or coconut milk. It's a good idea to make a reservation if it's Saturday night.
