Theosophical Society

Theosophical Society Review

Although the Society's limited hours and hard-to-find location make it a bit of a feat to visit, this large compound of 270 acres is nevertheless a unique and scenic part of Chennai's history that's worth the effort. Founded in 1875 in New York City, the Theosophical Society promotes beliefs that are an amalgamation of New Age, occult, and Hindu beliefs. In 1882, the Society moved to Chennai, where it remains. The Theosophical Society is widely renowned in India because of its president Annie Besant, who worked for India's independence from England in the years around World War I—many an Indian city has a Dr. Annie Besant Street as a result. In addition to the lush, tree-filled grounds, the Society also has a vast library containing many old religious and spiritual works.
