Luz Church

Luz Church Review

Built in 1516, this little, cream-color Portuguese church is the oldest church in the city. It has its own large courtyard, a welcome enclave amid the chaos of narrow pedestrian lanes around it. The interior is mostly whitewashed, with an altar that seems to owe as much to Hindu as to Portuguese design. Legend surrounds the construction of the church: it's said to have been built by Portuguese sailors who claimed to see a mysterious light on the shore, which guided them safely to port. The church is located at the spot where the light disappeared.
