St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's Church Review
Consecrated in 1680, this Anglican church is the oldest masonry structure in Fort St. George. The punkahs (pulley-operated ceiling fans) and some flags are gone, and the steeple has been replaced, but otherwise the building with its arcaded side aisles and bomb-proof roof has not changed. The wedding of governor Elihu Yale (of Yale University fame) was the first one performed here. Job Charnock, founder of Kolkata (then Calcutta), had his three daughters baptized here before the family moved to Bengal. The compound is paved with old tombstones including the oldest British tombstone in India, belonging to an Elizabeth Baker.
