When to Go

When to Go

Tamil Nadu's weather can be off-putting and draining, with high temperatures, high humidity, and impressive numbers of mosquitoes year-round in many areas. The best time to visit is between November and February, when the atmosphere remains relatively benign, and evenings might even be slightly cool. Winter is the time for temple festivals as well as the most important of Chennai's dance and music programs.

Summer, which begins around March, is even hotter. The state's single monsoon season (starting around October) cools things off, but it also brings torrential rains that can make roads impassable and travel difficult.

Upmarket hotels are being built at a quick pace, especially in Chennai, but room supply is still generally outnumbered by demand. To avoid a last-minute search and possible disappointments, make hotel reservations in advance—especially at the peak time of year.
