Udiapur and Environs

Romantic Udaipur, the major city here, warrants several days or more since the Aravali Hills and the Mewar region that surround the city have several fascinating day-trip destinations. The Mewar region is known for its rich military history—while much of what is now known as Rajasthan was taken over by the fierce Mughal emperor Akbar, Mewar maintained its autonomy—and the region's forts, including the impressive medieval citadel of Chittaurgarh and the remarkable fort at Kumbalgarh, not far from Ranakpur, are intriguing remains of this military might. Expect to also see marble palaces, elaborate gardens, serene temples, lush forests, and sparkling lakes. There are several famous temples and religious sites in the area, too, that are well worth visiting, including the spectacular Jain Temples in Ranakpur and Mount Abu and the Shiva temple complex at Eklingji; an overnight trip is recommended for a visit to Mount Abu.
