Taxis & Auto-Rickshaws in Rajasthan and Gujarat

Taxis & Auto-Rickshaws

More Travel Tips »

Taxis are unmetered in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur, so ask your hotel for the going rate and negotiate with the driver before you set off. For sightseeing within Jaipur and Jodphur, hire a cab through your hotel or the RTDC's Tourist Information Center (Visitor Information). Depending on the distance to be covered, a taxi for half a day will cost about Rs. 600, and for a full day about Rs. 1,200.

Auto-rickshaws in Jaipur are metered, but the meters are often ignored. Insist on adhering to the meter or set the price in advance. The rate should be no more than Rs. 4.50 per km (½ mi), with a minimum total of Rs. 10. Auto-rickshaws in Jodphur and Udaipur are unmetered, so you must agree on a price before departing. You can also hire an auto-rickshaw by the hour, for about Rs. 30 per hour. Note that all of these rates go up by about 50% after 11 pm.

In Gujarat, savvy auto-rickshaw driver can reach your destination faster than a cabbie or a driver. At this writing, fares in Ahmedabad are about Rs. 10 per km, with a starting charge of about Rs. 4; but rates change as fuel prices increase, and fares are theoretically calculated by matching the meter amount to the adjusted rate on the driver's tariff card. If the driver refuses to show you the card, get another rickshaw or agree on a fare in advance (ask a hotel staffer or a passerby what the fare should be). You can catch a taxi at the Ahmedabad airport or call one through your hotel. They're not plentiful, however, so you may have to hire a car and driver for the day.
