The churches of St. Paul, St. Thomas, and St. Francis of Assisi, all with whitewashed, baroque facades, hold faded paintings from the Portuguese era. St. Thomas's church, perched high at the market square's north end, is now a small museum with some interesting artifacts. These include statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary collected from churches nearby: some of them are carved from 400-year-old petrified wood, and a few of them are pretty ghastly looking. The museum is free and open daily from 9-9. You must take off your shoes before entering.
