On the way back to Vadodara you can stop at Pawagadh Fort, just a few kilometers outside Champaner, for an impressive view. The fort is mostly in ruins, but the Hindu and Jain temples here remain active pilgrimage centers. Its history is touching: once a Rajput fortress, it was overcome at the hands of Mahmud Begada, a Muslim king of Gujarat, in 1484 after a siege. This defeat led to the johar or self-immolation.
