In a narrow valley between red-and-green hills 45 km (28 mi) from Jaipur, this 18th-century palace, built in the shadow of a small fort, towers over its little village. The palace has splendidly painted and enameled public rooms. Guest rooms, which have pillars and arches, are furnished with traditional Rajasthani-style chairs and beds with mosquito-net canopies. The rooms are not regal, but they're charming, clean, and comfortable. Three kilometers (2 mi) from the palace is Samode Bagh, a luxurious tented camp, or "garden retreat"—all tents have attached bathrooms. Pros: staff can arrange horse, camel, and jeep safaris; both Samode Bagh and Palace have a swimming pool. Cons: outside Jaipur and city sights; no Internet at Samode Bagh.
