This palace built in 1747 was once the residence of the chief minister of the state. It's away from the city center, and the elegant white structure is extremely romantic. The lavish, Moghul-style garden has a row of fountains and an enormous chessboard with life-size pieces. The interior has been restored with Rajasthani handicrafts and heirlooms: the suites are sumptuous, with priceless antiques and artwork, and the other rooms are comfortable with ornate furnishings. Rooms look out over the lawns or the solar-heated pool. On-site entertainment includes puppet shows and folk dances. Soft strains of live Indian classical music waft over the lawn at breakfast time. The three restaurants here are Indian, Italian, and multicuisine. Pros: relatively good value for the money and the services you get, beautifully maintained lawns. Cons: the pool is just okay.

My wife and I spent 3 days at the Taj Jai Mahal Palace in April of 2009. We found the hotel, the grounds, and the staff to be excellent. There is a nice restaurant that serves a variety of Western and ethnic food--all excellent. Overall our experience was excellent.
