Next door to the Jagat Niwas Palace on Lal Ghat, in the old city, this haveli has a homey feel. The staff is family servents, and members of the family supervise the kitchen, which serves home-style Rajasthani food—a relief from the Punjabi and Mughlai cuisines that seem to dominate menus through the state. Ask for the rooms on the upper floor, since lower-floor rooms, closer to the water, can let in more smells. Rooms are large, simple, and lovingly restored. You will have to shout down the stairs for room service and there's a chance you'll be answered by a bark from the family dog that guards the courtyard. Pros: a decent budget option in the old city. Cons: no five-star frills or legions of staff, might be a little too homey for some.
