Built on the edge of Lake Pichola with a sublime view of the Lake Palace, the City Palace Complex, and the ghats, the Oberoi Udaivilas is one of the most luxurious—and expensive—hotels in India. Given the grand architecture with numerous domes and elegantly furnished rooms, this is a contemporary palace in its own right. For the ultimate experience, splurge on the suite with semiprivate pool (shared with other suites in the same row) that seems to ripple over onto serene Pichola, while deer come up to the edge of the hotel's private wildlife reserve. Traditionally dressed staff have an unusual old-world courtesy and genuine concern for the welfare of guests. The restaurants serve delicious Continental and Indian food. Pros: great service and surroundings, airport or railway pickup is free and luxurious, expansive garden and sanctuary area are ideal for spotting free roaming peacocks up close. Cons: extremely expensive, a bit out of the way from the old city by road (you can take a boat shortcut).
