This 15th-century fort, now a Heritage Hotel, is one of the finest retreats in India. The fort is perched on a plateau in the Aravali Hills. The rooms, which vary in size and price, are masterpieces. The architecture is characterized by wooden jalis (latticework screens), cusped arches, gleaming pillars, and niches. Forget about phones and TVs, because there are none. Just relax and watch preening peacocks and swooping parrots from the countless terraces, balconies, and courtyards. The restaurant serves fixed Rajasthani and Continental menus. The pool area has spectacular views of the town and beyond because the fort itself is on the hill. If you get a chance, do go check out the dilapidated yet charming stepwell (a well with steps for water collection) a 20-minute walk from the hotel (ask hotel staff for directions). Otherwise, the fort itself is fun to explore with all the stairways and pathways leading to stunning views and hidden alcoves. Pros: even some of the bathrooms have lovely views of the valley below, morning and afternoon tea with cookies included in room rate, sunsets are stunning. Cons: the just-okay buffet-style meals are served at fixed times, fort is full of stairs and steep ramps at every turn (watch your step), can get crowded on weekends.
